Pumpkin spice mix

This spice mix is heady with the fragrance of fresh spices and will take your Chocolate-glazed pumpkin & spice doughnuts from the Autumn 2023 issue of Fleurieu Living Magazine to the next level!

You’ll have plenty of spice mix leftover after making the doughnuts, so you can enjoy adding this to any baked goods that call for mixed spice or cinnamon – and get your day off to the best possible start by sprinkling this on your porridge 😊

Why you and your body will love this

We can all do with a little more spice in our lives! Spices have been used for centuries for both culinary and medicinal purposes, and there is now growing evidence that supports many of their traditional medicinal uses. Cinnamon and ginger, in particular, are rich in antioxidants that help to protect the body from the impact of free radicals, with both of these spices showing potential neuroprotective effects. Cinnamon also helps to stabilise blood sugar, and ginger is well-known for its anti-nausea and anti-inflammatory effects.

If you can source organic spices from a bulk food store, you’ll enjoy the greatest health benefits and flavour.

What you’ll need

4 teaspoons ground cinnamon
3 teaspoons ground ginger
1 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg (grating it yourself makes all the difference)
1 teaspoon ground allspice
¼ teaspoon ground cloves

What to do

Mix all spices well in a small glass jar. Seal tightly and store in a cool, dry place.

Use your spice mix up quickly so it keeps its beautiful fresh fragrance. (And now you know it only takes a minute to make the next batch, so there are no excuses!)
