A journey through Sri Lanka’s vibrant vegetarian culinary heritage celebrating the best of South Australian produce.
The Green Gourmet in partnership with Savindri Perera, MasterChef Australia 2024 Top 3
Chapel Hill Retreat,
Cnr Chapel Hill Rd &, Chaffeys Rd, McLaren Vale SA 5171
11am – 3pm
We are delighted to announce that our final workshop for the year will be a special collaboration with Savindri Perera, South Australia’s only MasterChef 2024 contestant and Top 3 Finalist.
When Sav and Andrea discovered they both share a love of food history, health through nutrition, and celebrating South Australian producers and produce, this collaborative workshop was the natural fit. And offering this at the spectacular Chapel Hill Retreat was the icing on the cake (or the temper on the curry, as you’ll soon learn!)
The term, ‘serendipity’ traces its origins back to ‘Serendip’, the ancient Persian name for Sri Lanka—a name evoking the magic of unexpected discoveries.
At Serendipity & Spice, we’ll bring this concept of delightful surprises to life by marrying Sav’s deep-rooted passion for Sri Lankan food and skilled use of spice with Andrea’s natural curiosity about traditional food cultures and their link to community, health and joy—all wrapped up in the best of the Fleurieu Peninsula’s local, seasonal produce.
Join us for a relaxing Sunday afternoon in the idyllic setting of Chapel Hill Retreat, where we’ll transform local vegetables and fruits sourced from Willunga Farmers Market, along with legumes, grains and spices into simple dishes that are as delicious as they are nourishing, helping you to put fresh, healthy meals on the table with ease.
As we cook together, you’ll learn about:
different styles of Sri Lankan curries: white, red, black and dry
the influence of Sinhalese, Tamil and Portuguese heritage on Sri Lankan food
the art of tempering, where the last-minute addition of fried spices bring dishes to life
simple local substitutes for traditional Sri Lankan ingredients
how traditional Ayurveda wisdom complements modern evidence-based nutritional knowledge
balancing flavours, textures and colours to create your own Sri Lankan feasts.
We’ll announce the final menu on social media closer to the date, but can guarantee there will be three delightfully different curries, a sambol or two, a vegetable mallung, rice in different guises, a fun flatbread for you to try your hand at, and a little nourishing sweet (but not too sweet!) something to finish with. 😊
With each dish, Andrea and Sav will bring together the ultimate fusion of tradition and innovation; international and local; flavour and wellbeing.
Our afternoon will conclude with a shared lunch in Chapel Hill’s dining room, featuring all the dishes we’ve created together.
Your workshop includes:
a mix of demonstration and hands-on cooking
lots of opportunities to chat and ask questions about Sri Lankan and wholefood cooking and nutrition
printed copy of all recipes and notes to take home
shared vegetarian lunch with Chapel Hill wines.
